Polysiloxanes as supports for catalysts

Journal Title: CHEMIK nauka-technika-rynek - Year 2013, Vol 67, Issue 12

Abstract

This article aims to review the current knowledge of the use of soluble polymers as catalyst supports, with particular emphasis on polysiloxanes. Physicochemical properties of polysiloxanes suggest their usefulness as catalyst supports. Synthesis of polysiloxanes of various macromolecular topologies – linear and star-shaped and hyperbranched – with the functional side groups capable of binding transition metals and enzymes is reported. These polymers were used as carriers for palladium and rhodium complexes as well as for lipase from Candida rugosa. Immobilized complexes of transition metals showed in model reactions activity comparable to that of homogeneous catalysts. The immobilized enzyme had an unpredictable activity as a result of poor control of the immobilization process.
