THE ORIGIN AND DEVELOPMENT OF FEMINIST SOCIAL THEORY: A HISTORICAL AND PHILOSOPHICAL ANALYSIS

Abstract
The origin and development of feminist social theory in the context of the history of social and philosophical thought is analyzed in the article. The history of the origin of the concept «feminism» and its interpretation in modern science is considered. It is proved that there is no universally accepted definition of feminism at the moment, because the definition of feminism depends on the context (political, social, economic, theoretical, etc.) in which it develops, as well as from the rise and fall of the women’s movement. The appearance and development of feminism are de-scribed. It was shown that in the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century, women’s suffrage movement splayed a big role in the formation of feminism. Itwas a social movement for women’s rights, as speciallyfor the civil right to vote. Characteristics of feminist methodology are characterized. Different versions of feminist theory can be classified as: 1) theories of gender differences; 2) theories of gender inequality; 3) theories of gender oppression; 4) theories of structuraloppression. It is shown that the basic concept of the modern feminist theory is the concept of «gender», which is still the subject of debate in the scientific community. In modern social philosophy the concept of gender is a base category, which «works» at the analysis of identity, interpersonal relationships, systemic and struc-tural levels of social analysis.
