A Bearing Cartridge Assembly for Longterm Performance of Momentum/Reaction Wheels used in Spacecraft
Journal Title: Tribology in Industry - Year 2014, Vol 36, Issue 1
Abstract
Momentum/reaction wheels are used in a spacecraft for the attitude control. They are used for the real time control of spacecraft attitude towards the desired direction as required by the mission. These are one of the few systems of a spacecraft which need to work continuously from the beginning to end of the mission. Thus the life of a space mission depends largely on the performance of the attitude control wheels. The common mode of failure in momentum/reaction wheel is mechanical and mostly related to the bearing and lubrication. This paper presents the design and development of a bearing cartridge assembly including the lubrication system for long-term performance of spacecraft attitude control wheels. The results of both theoretical and experimental analysis are presented. The experimental study of the assembly shows that it can perform continuously for a period of 30 years with reduced frictional losses.

Comparison of PID and Fuzzy PID Controller for a Linearised Magnetic Bearing
This paper is a presentation of a linear model of a magnetic bearing and a comparison of two controllers concerning their control performance. Initially, the benefits obtained by the use of magnetic bearings in the elect...
The Tribological Performance of Hardfaced/Thermal Sprayed Coatings for Increasing the Wear Resistance of Ventilation Mill Working Parts
During the coal pulverizing, the working parts of the ventilation mill are being worn by the sand particles. For this reason, the working parts are usually protected with materials resistant to wear (hardfaced/thermal sp...
Tribological Properties of WC-Co/NiCrBSi and Mo/NiCrBSi Plasma Spray Coatings under Boundary Lubrication Conditions
The tungsten carbide based WC-Co/NiCrBSi (50/50) and molybdenum based Mo/NiCrBSi (75/25) coatings were investigated under boundary lubricated sliding conditions, and their tribological properties were analysed and compar...
Topographic and Electrochemical Ti6Al4V Alloy Surface Characterization in Dry and Wet Reciprocating Sliding
This present paper shows the behavior of functional integrity state of a Ti6Al4V alloy under reciprocating wear sliding conditions in a comparative way for two different counter materials, steel and ceramic balls in dry...
Effect of Band Contact on the Temperature Distribution for Dry Friction Clutch
In this study, the two dimensional heat conduction problem for the dry friction clutch disc is modeled mathematically analysis and is solved numerically using finite element method, to determine the temperature field whe...
