A comparison of nonsyndromic cleft lip and palate
Journal Title: Forum Ortodontyczne - Year 2012, Vol 8, Issue 2
Abstract
There are reports that aetiology of cleft lip only (CL) differs from aetiology of cleft lip and palate (CLP). It may result from the fact that considering these two types of cleft together distorts results of research concerning the impact of potential risk factors, and thus comparative studies between CL and CLP should be conducted in the future. Aim of the study was to compare the prevalence of nonsyndromic cleft lip only and cleft lip and palate. The studied material consisted of 488 patients records, 138 of whom had cleft lip (29%) and 350 had cleft lip and palate (71%). Results: The cleft palate accompanied cleft lips (CLP) was found in 71% of patients. Both cleft types were more prevalent in the boys than in the girls, with a higher prevalence on the left side. Bilateral cleft occurred statistically more often in the cleft lip and palate (CLP) than in the cleft lip only (CL). Various combinations of cleft structures within the used clinical classification were detected. Conclusions: 1. CLP was much more fragment than CL only, which suggests that cleft lip is incomplete form of the defect; 2. Different cleft classification may facilitate the research in aetiology and diversification of defect; 3. The more severe the defect was assessed on the basis of the number of cleft structures, the more often both sides are affected. (Orthod. Forum 2012; 8: 45 - 51).
