A cytopathological study of breast lesions at tertiary health care centre
Journal Title: Medpulse International Journal of Surgery - Year 2019, Vol 9, Issue 3
Abstract
Background: Breast lesions, both benign and malignant, are quite common in Indian population. FNAC is a cheap, fast, and reliable diagnostic method. It also reduces the frequency of open biopsies. Histological examination is indispensable to the establishment of exclusion of a diagnosis of malignant disease. Aim: To study the frequency of various breast lesions on FNAC and its histopathological correlation. Material and Methods: The study subjects included 51 female patients and one male patient referred to the Department of Pathology for FNAC of breast mass. FNAC was done followed by histopathology examination and correlation was done to determine the accuracy of FNAC. Results: Cytologically, the inflammatory lesions were accounted for 4 cases, benign lesions 33 cases, malignant lesions 13 cases, unsatisfactory smear in one case and suspicious in one case. Overall accuracy rate was 94.28% and that for malignant lesions was 100%. There were no false negative or false positive cases recorded. Conclusion: The FNAC is found to be safe, quick, simple, cheap, reliable and accurate in diagnosis of all breast lesions. It would indeed be a blessing for patient, surgeon and pathologist if used judiciously.
