Journal Title: The Journal of International Social Research - Year 2017, Vol 10, Issue 54

Abstract

In this study, İsmet İnönü’s, the President of Republic, domestic travel to the Eastern and Black Sea cities, which took place between 14 and 26 September 1947, with the participation of Nihat Erim, a member of parliament from the Republican People’s Party, and Nuri Özsan, a member of parliament from the Democrat Party, has been evaluated in terms of its contribution to the Turkish democracy. This study has been primarily based on the publications of the period though other academic works have been also consulted. In this study, it has been aimed to answer the following questions: Why did İnönü need this travel? What kind of relation did he want between the political parties? What were the requirements for safely continuation of the multiparty regime in Turkey? What were the impacts of the travel on the ruling and opposition parties? It was observed that İnönü’s travel, complying with the Declaration of 12 July 1947, created a compromise between provincial organizations of the parties and democracy gained an impetus from periphery to center.
