A Shark and a Pack Leader. Strategies of Dominant Companies in Inter-organizational Networks

Abstract
The aim of the paper is to highlight strategies pursued by companies having a dominant position in an inter-organizational network, i.e. that of a “pack leader” and that of a “shark”. The first section defines the nature of inter-organizational networks and outlines the key issues relating to these, with an emphasis on the participants’ mutual dependence and position in the network. The following section describes how a company’s position in the network bears on the strategy that it chooses to follow. The third section presents a typology of strategies based on an organization’s position and mode of engagement, with a more in-depth treatment of two types of strategy that are typical of companies holding a strong position in an inter-organizational network. Finally, conclusions are drawn, limitations of the discussion are indicated, and the future strands of research are delineated.
