A Socially Responsible University – an Attempt to Approach the System

Journal Title: International Journal of Contemporary Management - Year 2010, Vol 9, Issue 2

Abstract

The author proposes that a socially responsible university is one that merges the following processes: knowledge management (KM) organizational development (OD) and quality management (QM) – for example TQM, EFQM. The thread is the university’s organisational culture (institutional culture). In this way, the university is an open system co-operating with the environment in which the game is played for students (learners) and the finances. The main goals of the university are to create and develop an individualized knowledge and to build a competitive advantage on that basis. The key to success is to implement the third mission. The goal of the paper is to point out the essential precondition for a university’s success is to understand and develop an integrated system of KM – OD – QM. The problem is illustrated by selected feedback gathered during interviews, conducted by the author, with the rectors of technical universities in late 2008 and 2009.
