A Study of Clinical Profile and Outcome of Inter-Costal Drainage Tube Insertion in Cases of Spontaneous Pneumothorax Admitted At Pulmonary Medicine Department at Tertiary Care Centre
Journal Title: International Journal Of Research In Medicine - Year 2016, Vol 5, Issue 4
Abstract
BACKGROUND:Pneumothorax is defined as the presence of air between parietal and visceral pleural cavity. Pneumothorax can be divided into Spontaneous Pneumothorax and Traumatic Pneumothorax. Spontaneous pneumothoraces are mostly seen in patients of Tuberculosis and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Diseases, primarily diagnosed with clinical examination and Chest X-ray. This study is undertaken to assess clinical profile, risk factors, various modalities for treatment and outcome of Intercostal Drainage tube (ICDT) in spontaneous pneumothorax METHODS: The present study includes patients of Spontaneous Pneumothorax (SP) admitted to indoor setting of Pulmonary Medicine Department at a tertiary care center. The study pattern was Observational Study. The data was collected using pre-tested questionnaire, which elicited demographic and clinical information. RESULTS: 40 patients were included in present study. All the parameters analyzed showed a Biphasic pattern in age distribution in 3rd and 5th decade with male preponderance. It also suggested height and smoking to be a risk factor for Spontaneous Pneumothorax. Commonest etiological factor was found to be Tuberculosis followed by Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). 100% and 80% resolution were seen with ICDT insertion in cases of Primary SP and Secondary SP respectively. CONCLUSION: Majority of the Spontanous Pneumothrax in India are caused by Tuberculosis followed by COPD, usually in 3rd and 5th decade of life. They can effectively be managed by timely Tube Thorcostomy.
