A study of epidemiology and prevalence of pregnancy induced hypertension (PIH) in pregnant women
Journal Title: Medpulse International Journal of Gynaecology - Year 2018, Vol 7, Issue 3
Abstract
Background: Worldwide, 10 % of all pregnancies are complicated by hypertension, with pre-eclampsia and eclampsia being the major causes of maternal and prenatal morbidity and mortality Aims and Objectives: To Study Epidemiology and Prevalence of Pregnancy Induced Hypertension (PIH) in pregnant women. Methodology: After approval from institutional ethical committee a cross-sectional study was carried out in the department of OBGY of a tertiary health care centre during one year period i.e. January 2017 to January 2018, before starting actual study a pilot study for one month carried out and the prevalence of PIH in that study was 20 % so the sample size for this was calculated by the formula. The sample size was 400. So this 400 ANC patients who were delivered at the Department of OBGY assessed whether having PIH/Eclampsia or not during the ANC period, those who give written explained consent were included into the study. All data like age, parity, associated factors were recorded. The statistical analysis was done by SPSS 19 version software. In our study we have found that Out of the 400 patients we found 95 patients were having problem of PIH and hence the prevalence of PIH in our tertiary health care centre was 23.75%. Result: The majority of the patients with PIH were having age more than >35 were 32.63%, 30-35 were 26.32% as compared to Normal they having 12.13% and 25.90% respectively, this increase in the no, of patients as age increases was statistically significant (χ2=23.83,df=4,p<0.0001). The factors significantly associated with the PIH patients were Primi-para (χ2=19.82,df=1,p<0.001); BMI >25 (χ2=34.67,df=1,p<0.0001); Previous History Present 2=45.32,df=1,p<0.0001, H/o Infertility Present(χ2=17.54, df=1s,p<0.001). Conclusion: It can be concluded from our study that the prevalence of PIH in our study was 23.75%. The factors associated with PIH, increasing age, Primi-para, Previous History, H/o Infertility Present.
