A Study Of The Leprosy Cases Attending The Outpatient Department Of A Tertiary Care Hospital

Abstract
Background: Leprosy is one of the oldest known communicable diseases of mankind. The number of new cases is in increasing in the trend. A study was undertaken in a tertiary level care hospital to estimate incidence of leprosy, between a periods of 2017 to 2019. All the cases of suspected leprosy cases attending outpatient department of Malla Reddy Narayana Multispecialty Hospital, Hyderabad were included for the study. After complete clinical examination and necessary routine examinations the results were tabulated and analysed. Material and methods: The present study is a longitudinal study for a period of 21 months from 2017 to 2019. It was conducted in DVL Department of Malla Reddy Medical College for Women. A pre-tested format was prepared by including demographic particulars of the study subjects. Details of the present complaints were recorded. Slit skin smears were done for the detection of lepra bacilli. After confirmation, patients were kept on MBMDT and the results were tabulated. Results and discussion: During study period, 25 cases of leprosy attended OPD Department of DVL. 16 cases out of total were slit skin smear positive. Two cases showed scanty bacilli and the remaining cases were confirmed diagnosis through biopsy. In the present study 48% of cases were belonging to either pure lepromatous and boredeline lepromatous cases. 50% of study subjects were from local area and the remaining from all over TS. Common age group in the study is second and third decade of age and more predominant in males. Among the seven reported cases of lepromatous type one case was found HIV positive and patient was kept on MBMDT along with HAART. Conclusion: The disease trend is similar to National trend in number and clinical types. Slit skin smear is an important tool for the confirmation of diagnosis.
