A study on sensory processing characteristics of preschool children with autism spectrum disorder
Journal Title: Shanghai Journal of Preventive Medicine - Year 2022, Vol 34, Issue 10
Abstract
ObjectiveTo explore the sensory processing characteristics of preschool children with autism spectrum disorder ï¼ASDï¼ï¼ and to provide a theoretical basis for early screening and intervention training of ASD.MethodsA total of 215 preschool children with ASD and 170 typically developed ï¼TDï¼ children were investigated with a basic situation questionnaire and sensory processing measure ï¼SPMï¼. The two groups were stratified according to age and genderï¼ and the differences of scores in sensory domains were compared to analyze the sensory processing characteristics of preschool children with ASD.ResultsThe scores of social participationï¼ visionï¼ hearingï¼ touchï¼ taste and smellï¼ body awarenessï¼ balance and motionï¼ planning and ideasï¼ and total sensory system in children with ASD were all higher than those in children with TD ï¼all P<0.01ï¼. The highest degree of abnormality was found in hearing and the lowest degree in taste and smell in children with ASD. The results of Spearman correlation analysis showed that in the 4-year-old and 5-year-old children with ASDï¼ the scores of vision ï¼rs= -0.200ï¼ P= 0.033ï¼ and hearing ï¼rs=-0.194ï¼ P=0.040ï¼ decreased with age. There was no correlation between the scores of other developmental quotients and age ï¼all P>0.05ï¼. Boys and girls with ASD had higher scores in all developmental quotients than TD children ï¼P<0.01ï¼. Howeverï¼ there was no significant gender difference in any developmental quotients of ASD children ï¼all P>0.05ï¼.ConclusionSensory processing abnormalities are common in preschool children with ASDï¼ which are different from those of TD children in multiple sensory domains. Sensory processing abnormalities may be used as an indicator for early screening of ASDï¼ and it is necessary to conduct corresponding intervention training for sensory processing abnormalities in children with ASD.
