A STUDY TO ASSESS THE KNOWLEDGE AND PRACTICES REGARDING TOILET USAGE UNDER SWACHH BHARAT MISSION IN TRIBAL VILLAGES OF BASTAR, CHHATTISGARH (INDIA)

Abstract
BACKGROUND The Govt. of India has launched Swachh Bharat Mission on 2nd October 2014 in order to expedite efforts towards universal cleanliness. Swachh Bharat Mission focus is to improve sanitation in rural areas, reduce open defaecation, management of solid and liquid wastes and also to ensure construction of toilets in rural areas with an aim to bring an improvement in the general quality of life, promoting cleanliness and to promote social inclusion by improving sanitation especially in marginalized communities. The aim of the study is to assess the usage pattern and ascertain the causes of non-usage of household toilets in tribal population. MATERIALS AND METHODS A cross sectional observational community-based study was done within 123 households from Dimrapal and Pamela village of Bastar district of Chhattisgarh. These are the field practice areas of Department of Community Medicine, Late B.R.K.M. Govt. Medical College, Jagdalpur, and Chhattisgarh. Questions were asked regarding sociodemographic variables, presence or absence of toilets, usage of toilet and reasons for usage as well as non-usage. Data was collected after taking prior consent. Data was collected through oral questionnaire and recorded on proformas and thereafter analysed using MS Excel, and appropriate tests were applied for significance. RESULTS 83.74% (Total 123) households were having Sanitary Latrine. 69.16% households’ toilets were built by the government. 30.6% households were practicing open defaecation in spite government built sanitary latrines. 14.63% households had infants and out of these 88.9% disposes the infant faeces in open area. Majority (89.43%) of household population belonged to ST Category. CONCLUSION The present study revealed that in order to achieve the aim, implementation of Swachh Bharat Mission needs to be improved at tribal village level. The Practice of open air defecation needs to be stopped. The overall assessment of households revealed that there is a need to create more awareness regarding sanitary toilet use in tribal areas.
