A SWOT ANALYSIS TO EVALUATE RURAL TOURISM POTENTIAL OF MUGLA/ORTACA DISTRICT

Abstract
Rural tourism is seen as an important option in recent years for the tourists whose seek alternative instead of classical holiday concept including sea-sand-sun. From this viewpoint, it is matter to determine and analyse rural tourism potential of destinations from various aspects for using this potential and diversification of tourism. In this study, it is aimed that evaluating rural tourism potential and revealing strong-weak aspects along with opportunities and threats about rural tourism of Ortaca district which located in Mugla city. In this context, primarily conceptual informations are given about rural tourism by review the literature. Then, at the next section, informations about Ortaca district are given and evaluated rural tourism potential of this district. Having important easy access agricultural areas which is produced agricultural products such as pomegranate and citrus takes attention as a vital strong aspect of Ortaca district about rural tourism. Also, near location to Dalaman airport and favorable climate can be thought as one of the strong aspects of Ortaca with regard to rural tourism. However, having not enough experience of local community about rural tourism and being unwilling to enterprises of domestic investor for rural tourism can be thought weak aspects of Ortaca. Increased interest about rural tourism and local life and new destination seekings can be a opportunity factor for Ortaca in the future. Beside this, destinations such as near located Fethiye where has rural tourism attractions come into prominence in the future can be thought as a negative factor for Ortaca with regard to demand. Therefore, it will be better approach to focus on agro-tourism for the Ortaca district’s rural tourism activities.
