ABRASIVE WEAR MECHANISMS OF THIN PVD COATINGS AFTER BALL-CRATERING TESTS
Journal Title: Tribologia - Year 2015, Vol 259, Issue 1
Abstract
The article presents the wear mechanisms of thin PVD coatings during abrasive wear the ball-cratering method. Abrasive wear tests were performed on chosen antiwear PVD coatings with the optimum work parameters of friction node [L. 1–5]. (The test friction node is created by the rotating ball and the immobile sample disc, which is pressed against it, and an abrasive slurry is drip fed into the contact zone.) The aim of the paper was to analyse the interface of coating – substrate. This area is located on the surface of the wear scar in the shape of a crater after tribological tests. The test area was observed using microscopic techniques: scanning electron microscope (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and interferometry microscope (White Light Interferometry WLI). The premise of the author was to show the repetitive nature of the wear mechanism of PVD coatings by ball cratering. It influences the receiving repetitive wear scar.
