Acceptance and commitment therapy in the reduction of caregiver overload of older adults
Journal Title: Revista Eugenio Espejo - Year 2024, Vol 18, Issue 3
Abstract
This research aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) in reducing overload in caregivers of older adults at the León Ruales Nursing Home in Ibarra-Ecuador, during the year 2023. The research followed a quantitative, non-experimental design and analytical scope. The population consisted of 10 caregivers (5 women and 5 men) aged between 28 and 50. A group intervention program was implemented as part of an organizational strategy to address caregivers' mental health. Two instruments were used to collect data: the Zarit Caregiver Overload Scale and the Acceptance and Commitment Questionnaire. II (AAQ-II), processed using IBM SPSS Statistics 26. The results showed a significant reduction in the mean overload from 56.2 to 27.6, indicating a transition from intense to no overload. The standard deviation increased from 3.36 to 11.5, reflecting more significant variability in post-intervention scores. Additionally, the mean on the AAQ-II decreased from 30.1 to 21.1, indicating a decrease in experiential avoidance. The Student's T statistic values (-7.84 and -6.07) and the p-value < 0.001 confirmed the statistical significance of these changes. In conclusion, the ACT-based intervention effectively reduced caregivers' perceived overload and experiential avoidance, suggesting a significant improvement in their well-being. These findings support the use of ACT as a valuable clinical strategy.
