ADAPTATION PECULIARITIES OF ENGLISH BORROWINGS IN UKRAINIAN INTERNET TERMINOLOGY
Journal Title: Науковий вісник Херсонського державного університету. Серія: “Лінгвістика” - Year 2018, Vol 32, Issue
Abstract
The proposed article considers adaptation of English borrowings, Internet terms in the Ukrainian language. The immediacy of the problem is stipulated by a swift spread of the Internet both among specialists for professional purposes and amateurs in everyday life that favors the considerable increase in the volume and acceleration of the rate of international communication. The subject of the study is the most productive way of enriching scientific term systems – borrowings, by which, as a rule, the elements of alien language (words, morphemes, syntactic constructions, etc.), borrowed from one language to another are understood. The article also considers the structure of the linguistic category of borrowings: borrowings proper (barbarisms, exotics, partially assimilated borrowings), calques (word-formative, semantic, phraseological), hybrid formations. The author has proved that borrowings of all types were found in the Ukrainian language. In addition, the structural and the semantic types of borrowings of English Internet terms in the Ukrainian language are described in this article. In the course of the study, the tendency to parallel formation of terms was discovered: one of the terms is English, the other is original, and both of them are used with the same frequency in the target language. Analyzing the process of assimilation of direct borrowings, i.e. borrowing of lexemes through the maximum adaptation of their phonetic, graphic, grammatical and lexical-grammatical characteristics to the appropriate norms of the target language, we come to the conclusion that borrowing of Anglicism’s with graphic change (transcription and transliteration, though it is transliteration which is most frequently used) is typical of the Ukrainian computer sublanguage.
