ADRENOCORTIAL RESPONSES TO EXHAUSTING LABORATORY EXPERTION IN ENDURANCE-TRAINED ATHLETES
Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2008, Vol 24, Issue 2
Abstract
Background. The aim of the study was to examine anticipation of an exhausting laboratory test and post-exertion biological responses in endurance-trained athletes.Material and methods. Orienteers, 14 females aged 18.4+/-1.5 y. and 18 males aged 19.0+/-1.3 y. underwent incremental graded exertion on treadmill untill volitional exhaustion. Capillary blood was sampled in the morning, at 8:00, 10 minutes prior to the test, and within 3 and 30 minutes of post-test recovery. Pre-test blood was sampled before noon; 10:00-12:00 a. m. Plasma cortisol in all samples was determined with using commercial ELISA kit (IBL, Germany. Blood lactate at 3 minute following the test was measured using DrLange kit (Germany).Results. The mean value of morning plasma cortisol level was similar in females (487+/-67 nmol/L) and males (483+/-112 nmol/L). Pre-test mean plasma cortisol level was higher by 36% in females than in males. During post-test recovery, plasma cortisol was elevating gradually in both sexes, reached maximium values within +30 minute, 767+/-242 in females and 576+/-108 nmol/L in males and was significantly higher in comparison to those pre-event values. Post-exertion mean blood lactate level was significantly (p<0.05) higher in females (12.1+/-2.1) compared to that in males (10.8+/-2.1 mmol/L).Conclusions. Based on cortisol measurements we may conclude, that female orienteers stronger responded to anticipatory stress and to exhausting laboratory exercise test.
