Adsorption of Basic Blue3 (BB3) dye from aqueous solution by tartaric acid modified sunflower stem: Kinetics and Equilibrium studies

Journal Title: International Research Journal of Applied and Basic Sciences - Year 2015, Vol 9, Issue 5

Abstract

The presence of dyes in water, even at very low concentrations, is highly visible and undesirable. Adsorption is one of the Conventional methods for removing dyes from water and wastewater effluents. Therefore, the purpose of this research was investigated removal of BB3 dye from aquatic solutions by tartaric acid modified modified sunflower. This study was non-continuous experiment which was implemented under laboratory conditions by changing effective factors such as pH, contact time, adsorbent concentration and adsorbent dosage. The concentration of BB3 was measured spectrophotometer at the wavelength of 654 nm. The result showed that BB3 removal efficiency increased by increasing of adsorbant dosage, pH and contact time and decreasing of BB3 concentration. The equilibrium data was best fitted on Langmuir type 2 isotherm and the adsorption kinetic model followed a pseudo-second order type 1 model. In optimum condition, modified sunflower removed 91% of BB3 from aqueous solutions. According to the results obtained, modified sunflower appears to be suitable, low cost and efficient adsorbent for removing BB3 from aqueous solutions.
