Advanced granulation technologies: a review

Journal Title: Indian Journal of Research in Pharmacy and Biotechnology - Year 2014, Vol 2, Issue 6

Abstract

Agglomerate and granule are descriptive terms that refers to the accumulation of small particles in to larger aggregates. Although both terms are similarly defined, inspection of the manufacturing process, provides an easy method of differentiating the two aggregation phenomena, namely, agglomeration refers to the buildup small particles into the larger aggregates with the aid of binding agent or mechanical force-water, starch paste, roller compaction. Granulation is one of the most important unit operations in the production of pharmaceutical oral dosage forms. It will improve flow and compression characteristics, reduce segregation, improve content uniformity, and eliminates excessive amount of fine particles. Pharmaceutical products are processed all over the world using the direct compressing, wet granulation or dry granulation methods etc. Much equipment’s which is used for the process of granulation and drying are being used in present day pharmaceutical industries. Use of such equipment helps reduce the time, cost and also the processing steps involved in production of a product. Choosing a method requires through investigation of each ingredient in the formulae, the combination of each ingredient and how they work with each other, then the proper granulation process can be applied. The objective of present article was to focus on the novel granulation techniques which are employed in the pharm industry
