Alternative bite analysis

Journal Title: Prosthodontics - Year 2017, Vol 67, Issue 3

Abstract

Introduction. Occlusion is one of the elements that affect the proper functioning of the entire stomatognathic system. The aim of prosthetic treatment is to restore the correct and regular contacts between the upper and lower arch in centric relation. The analysis of occlusion is examined with articulating papers, foil and electronic devices. The aim. Comparison between T-scan III and articulating papers with fibrinous papers occlusal contacts registration. Materials and methods. Clinical examination involved a group of 20 patients with complete dental arches in age from 23 to 25 years. The examination of contacts between the lower and upper jaw were performed among the group of patient. The contacts were recorded with articulating papers BK 54 - 100 μm (Bausch) with fibrinous papers Arti-Dry BK 609 - 80 μm. At the same time an analysis of occlusal registration with T-Scan III (Tescan, Boston, USA) were performed. ArtiDry papers with applied contacts were scanned and compared with graphic program (GIMP) with outcomes from T-Scan. GIF animations of each patient were prepared by manipulating the transparency of received images. All animations were shown to a group of 30 people not involved in the study. Each person reviewed 20 animations rating each on 10-point convergence scale of contacts, where 0 meant complete lack of convergence and 9 total convergence between contacts. Results. The subjective assessment of convergence methods for testing the occlusion showed similar diagnostic value. Conclusions. Articulating papers and fibrinous papers are an alternative measurement value in relation to T-Scan III.
