An Analysis of the Non-distinction between Weakness of Will and Compulsion: With a Discussion on Its Application in Medical Practice

Journal Title: Medicine and Philosophy - Year 2024, Vol 45, Issue 22

Abstract

Research on the moral attribution of weakness of will and compulsion primarily encompasses the standard view, the identificationist view, and the revisionism. The standard view posits that an individual's control over desires is the core distinction between the two, while the identificationist view use the degree of identification with desires as the criterion. However, both perspectives are grounded in the backward-looking approach and thus fail to effectively address the distinction between weakness of will and compulsion. Revisionism, by challenging the standard and the identification view and adopting the forward-looking approach, suggests that individuals may still bear moral responsibility even when actions stem from compulsion, thereby eliminating the boundary between the two. Compared to other perspectives, revisionism presents distinct advantages and is better suited for application in medical practice.
