Most common cause for blindness in blind school students was found to be avoidable blindness (34%) which includes preventable blindness (18%) and curable or treatable blindness (16%). Next common cause was found to be congenital (30%) which includes microphthalmos (16%) and anophthalmos (14%). Optic atrophy was found in 16% cases and included both primary and secondary types. Rest of the causes included Nystagmus with amblyopia (10%), retinal degenerations and dystrophy (4%), retinal coloboma with iris coloboma (4%), and phthisis bulbi.
