AN EVALUATION ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF CITTASLOW MOVEMENT IN TURKEY

Abstract
Cittaslow, born in Italy, emerged as a protest movement against the negative effects of globalization and the fast lifestyle in urban societies. Cittaslow aims to achieve a sustainable local development and increase the citizens’ quality of life with an alternative urban development idea. The movement spread and increased awareness progressively in Turkey after that Seferihisar joined the International Cittaslow Association in the year of 2009. In the study, the Slow Movement and Slow Food as a background of the Cittaslow Movement, the emergence conditions, the membership process and requirements of Cittaslow are examined within the framework of examples in the world and Turkey. In this context, expressing the circumstance of the Cittaslow Movement in Turkey is the aim of this study. During the brief history of Cittaslow; emerging facts, putting efforts and challenges affected the development of Cittaslow in Turkey. The authentic side of the Cittaslow Movement in Turkey is the including towns which are from different part of the country, have socio-economic development level and local administrations ruling by different political parties. The study is significant in terms of the evaluation of the development of Cittaslow and the suggestions for the future of the movement in Turkey.
