AN EXPERIMENTAL SECTION OF A SEA WALL WITH GEOTEXTILE CORE

Journal Title: Biuletyn Instytutu Morskiego - Year 1994, Vol 21, Issue 1

Abstract

An experimental section of a seawall with sand-filled geotextile core was built by hydromechanical method as part of the oil handling pier in the North Port of Gdansk. The geotextile core is a substitute solution to replace the inner rubble mound. The seawall is made ofr.c. sheet piling capped at its sill as a wave reflector. Its forefront is protected by a riprap of variegated stone sizes, resting on the geotextile. The replacement part within the 108 m long experiment section holds a sand-filled geotextile coated core. The cost to construct the experiment section has been substantially less than that of the section built by conventional method and its efficiency after one-year followed-up period is found satisfactory, in spite of very heavy storms ( 12° Beaufort scale) occurring in the area during that time.
