An in depth study of a song of Tagore : jharā pātā go āmi tomāri dale

Abstract

The object of study of the present paper is a well known song of Tagore : jharā pātā go āmi tomāri dale. It should be noted that this study is confined only to the poetic aspect of the song ; the musical aspect is excluded. This song belongs to the subsection basanta (spring) of the section prakŗti (nature). However in this song we do not find the usual imageries that are associated with spring. Here the poet focalizes his attention on the dry fallen leaves which occupy a marginal position in literature.. Tagore unveils the inner beauty of the fallen leaves which have no place in the universe of external beauty. Through an in depth study of the salient linguistic features of the song we have tried to demonstrate how this theme has been developed at various levels : lexical, morpho-syntactic and semantic levels.
