ANALYSIS OF BACTERIOLOGICAL PREVALENCE IDICATORS OF CORYNEBACTERIUM DIPHTHERIAE AMONG THE POPULATION OF KHARKIV REGION (UKRAINE)

Journal Title: World Science - Year 2017, Vol 5, Issue 10

Abstract

Diphtheria is a toxicoinfection with a severe and high mortality level. Diphtheria pathogens are bacteria Corynebacterium diphtheriae of genus Corynebacterium [1]. The pathogenesis of the disease is caused by the action on the body of the diphtheria exotoxin, which is a sour globular protein that consists of a single polypeptide chain (Mr = 58,358). Diphtheria toxin (DT) is a protein synthesis inhibitor, which is highly toxic for humans, guinea pigs, rabbits, some bird species [2]. DT is synthesized in the bacterial cell in an inactive form and receives some toxic properties under the actions of the bacterial and tissue proteolytic enzymes such as trypsin [2]. The only effective way to protect the population against diphtheria is by far the specific vaccinal prevention, aimed at the production of antitoxic antibodies [3, 4]. The lessons from the recent diphtheria epidemic in Ukraine (the end of the 90ies of the last century) stimulate a further study of the infectious agent. For Ukraine this epidemic was characterized by the predominance of the adult population in the structure of infected cases (70-80%), a high incidence among vaccinated children (80% of all infected children), a high proportion of not severe localized forms of infection (80 % of other clinical forms) [5]. This tendency was typical for the whole territory of the post-Soviet countries [6]. The incidence in Kharkov exceeded all Ukrainian indicators at 3-4 times until 2004 [7].
