ANALYSIS OF NORMAL GLENOHUMERAL JOINT PROPRIOCEPTION
Journal Title: Issues of Rehabilitation, Orthopaedics, Neurophysiology and Sport Promotion-IRONS - Year 2013, Vol 5, Issue 5
Abstract
ABSTRACT Introduction. The anatomy of glenohumeral joint, belonging to the shoulder complex allows for the largest range of movement of all joints of the human body. Therefore, normal stabilization becomes a very important factor for this joint in its proper functioning. Aim. The purpose of this study was the detailed analysis of the normal glenohumeral joint based on joint position sensation. Material and methods. Studies were carried out on a group of 32 people (15 women, 17 men) with an average age of 22.9 (± 1.15) and a negative history of trauma or other disturbances within both shoulders. The tests were performed using an electronic goniometer PROPRIOMETR connected to a PC. Active reproduction of the position of both joints was measured in following movements: abduction, flexion, internal and external rotation. We analysed the results presented as absolute value of error for the active reproduction of joint position. Results. Basing on the collected results, the increased ability to reproduce the joint position was observed in combination with the higher testing angles in each of tested directions of movement. There was no statistically significant difference between error of active joint position reproduction dependent on gender and dominance of extremity. Conclusions. The ability to reproduce the joint position in active movement increases with increasing of upper extremity angle. Furthermore, there is no correlation between sex or dominance of the extremity and the achieved results of glenohumeral joint active position.
