ANALYSIS THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE NUTRITIONAL BEHAVIOURS OF 11-13 YEAR OLD CHILDREN AND THEIR ATTITUDES TOWARDS THEIR OBESE PEERS

Abstract
The aim of this study is to analyze relationship 11-13 year old (x=12,19+82 years old) children nutritional behaviours and their attitudes towards their obese peers. In Istanbul 402 volunteer students (204 girls and 198 boys) from two public schools in Kartal and Maltepe districts participated in this study. To determine the nutritional behavior, nutritional behaviour scale developed by Edmundson et al (1996) and adapted to the Turkish students by Öztürk and Erdoğan (2010) was used. In this scale; the lowest score is -14 and the highest is +14 in total. Attitude scale for obese children developed by Çelik and Ark (2015) was used for determining the attitudes of the school children towards their obese peers. In this scale, the lowest point is 0 and the highest point is 50 in total. Arithmetical averages of the students’ scores were taken. Using Pearson correlation coefficients, the relationship among averages was analyzed and the level of significance was set at p<0.05. Nutritional behaviours of all children were found to be moderate as 2.28+5.62, with 3.01+5.54 for the girls and 1.52+ 5.61 for the boys. Attitude scales of all children towards their obese peers were found positive 65,41+10,13, with 65,97+9,79 for the girls and 64.83+10,46 for the boys. As for gender specific scores, no significant relationship was found between the nutritional behaviours of the children and their attitudes towards their obese peers (p>0.05). Similarly, no meaningful relationship was observed between the nutritional behaviours of all children and their attitudes towards their obese peers (p>0.05).
