Antibacterial activity of Nano-Silver capped by β-Cyclodextrin
Journal Title: Carbon - Science and Technology - Year 2013, Vol 5, Issue 1
Abstract
Silver nanoparticles were prepared by chemical reduction method using sodium citrate as reducing agent, followed by capping with various concentrations of β-Cyclodextrin (β-CD) and characterized by various physicochemical characterization techniques. Antibacterial activity of Pseudomonas aeruginosa (Gram-negative) and Staphylococcus aureus (Gram-positive) was determined by Well-Diffusion method. The nano-silver were spherical under Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and the XRD result shows average diameters of capped particles are smaller than their equivalent uncapped particles. Capped nano silver particles of four different concentrations were demonstrated as superior for photo stability, when exposed to intense ultraviolet (UV-Vis) radiation for 4 hours, as well as significantly higher antibacterial activity. The influence of β-CD concentration (5 mM, 10 mM and 15 mM) was seems to be delay in bacterial growth, showing that a Trojan horse mechanism may be owing to occur bacterial affinity, thereby improving silver ion absorption.

Is vacuum annealing converts p-type single wall carbon nanotube field effect transistor (in air) to n-type (in vacuum) is universially true (?)
Our study on nickel silicide and gold contacted single-wall-carbon-nanotube field effect transistors (SWCN-FETs) is in sharp contrast to earlier published reports of type conversion in SWCN-FETs (from p- to n-) when cycl...
Preparation, microstructure and oxidation resistance of SiCN ceramic matrix composites with glass-like carbon interface
Glass-like carbon (GC) interface was successfully introduced into carbon fiber-reinforced SiCN ceramic matrix composite (C/GC/SiCN) by polymer infiltration and pyrolysis using phenolic resin as precursor. In order to hig...
Activated carbons from African oil palm waste shells and fibre for hydrogen storage
We prepared a series of activated carbons by chemical activation with two strong bases in-group that few use, and I with waste from shell and fibers and oil-palm African. Activated carbons are obtained with relatively hi...
Investigation of composite coated Ti-C-N surfaces with ball-cratering test method
We present the performance of dry sliding metal-metal wear performance of AISI SS410 and Ti-C-N coated specimens at room temperature. In this investigation, the ball cratering abrasive wear testing method was used with a...
The examination of NiO and CoOx catalysts supported on Al2O3 and SiO2 for carbon nanotubes production by catalytic chemical vapor deposition of methane
The effects of catalyst components on the synthesis of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are always the concern of many. The aim of this work is to examine the dependence of the morphology of CNTs formed on the nature of NiO and C...
