Antisexism and Gender Political Correctness in Modern English

Abstract

The article provides the overview of the feminist linguistics and explores the relevant issues of language sexism and political correctness in modern English. It focuses on the problems of gender inequality in language raised long ago in one form or another by A. Bierce, L. Carroll, A. Milne and then in the famous book by R. Lakoff who is considered to have established language and gender as an object of study in linguistics and other disciplines. The author concentrates upon the issue of the "false generic" which is one of the main targets of feminists and upon the recommendations to deal with the "gender biased" words including professional terms, offered in numerous guidelines. Additionally, the article examines the changes of the use and feminist attitude towards the traditional nouns denoting female person "woman", "girl", "lady" based upon mass media and internet discourse. It reveals feminist efforts to revive the word "woman" whose strength " is that it can be used to affirm our humanity, dignity and worth, without denying our embodied femaleness or treating it as a source of shame". The author concludes that the attitude of the English-speaking community towards attempts to overcome the language sexism is extremely controversial. However, the movement for gender equality is persistent and affects all language levels, offering a wide field of research.
