ARE WE RAISING OUR CHILDREN TO BE MATERIALISTS? THE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN PARENTAL ATTITUDES AND YOUNG ADULTS’ MATERIALISM

Abstract
Abstract: The aim of the study was to determine whether young adults’ materialism was different depending on the profile of their parents’ behaviors. The EMBU Inventory (My Memories of Upbringing) by W. Arrindell (1999), the Material Values Scale (MVS) by M. Richins (2004) and the scale to measure motives for making money by A. Srivastava, E. Locke and K. M. Bartol (2001) were used in the study. In total, 453 people were surveyed, including 335 women (74 percent) and 118 men (26 percent). The study shows that both parents' attitudes play an important part in developing a materialistic orientation in young people. A rejecting attitude and an overprotective attitude promote materialism. In order to determine whether the level and structure of young adults’ materialism differed depending on the profile of parental behaviors, hierarchical cluster analysis was performed. It showed that the samples in the study differed only in terms of variables describing materialism as the importance of having and making money to achieve one's major goals in life (in all dimensions of materialism). No statistically significant differences were found with reference to materialism that sees the source of happiness and the determinant of life success in possessing financial goods.
