Assessment of Durability of Coated Steel to be used in Manufacture of Hydro-Mechanical Equipments Operational in Acidic Hydro Environment

Abstract

Among the different sources of energy, hydropower is recognized as a major renewable source, which is economical, non-polluting and eco-friendly. In long run the performance of hydro power projects get affected predominantly due to chemical nature of water. If the hydro-environment happens to be acidic due to acid mine discharge it will affect the functioning of hydro equipments and may result in alteration of turbine blade profile, increased vibration, fatigue damage, inefficient operation and even the system failure. Most of the hydro electric projects whose reservoirs are charged by tributaries flowing through the state of Meghalaya are experiencing severe problem of acid mine discharge. Projects like Kopili Hydro Electric Project are already experiencing corrosion/erosion problem in its hydro mechanical equipments. In upcoming projects robust materials which should resist deterioration needs to be used to get rid of such problem. The material should pass various durability tests viz. acid resistance and under water abrasion tests etc. as per standard procedure laid down in various codes and practices. The present paper discusses assessment of durability of coated steel to be used for fabrication of hydro mechanical equipments to be used in Myntdu-Leshka Hydro Electric Project, Meghalaya, India, which is exposed to acidic hydro environment.
