Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2009, Vol 25, Issue 4
Abstract
Background. The aim of the study was to assess intake of energy, macronutrients, water and vitamins in cavers during an expedition to the Salzburg Alps. Materiał and methods. Dietary intake in 14 cavers was estimated from a food record kept over three consecutive days. Intake of energy, macronutrients, water and vitamins was calcu-lated using the Dieta 2.0 computer programme. Statistical analysis was carried out by means ofthe SPSS 12.0 PL for Windows computer programme. Results. Statistically significant differences were found for intake of total energy, total protein, animal protein, plant protein, total fat, saturated fatty acids, monounsaturated fatty acids, polyun-saturated fatty acids, cholesterol, total carbohydrates, starch, water and vitamins E, Bi, B2, Be, PP and folie acid, as well as for intake of total energy, total protein, total fat, polyunsaturated fatty acids and vitamins E, B1, B2, B6, PP and folie acid expressed as per cent of norm. Statistically significant differences were also found for the percentages ofthe studied cavers in the reference ranges for intake of: total energy, total fat and vitamins E, Bi, B2, Be, PP and folie acid. Conclusions. Dietary intake in the studied cavers during an expedition to the Salzburg Alps was highly unfavourable. In order to prevent nutritional mistakes and to avoid any accidents caused by malnutrition and hypoglycaemia, nutrition in caving should be taught to the partici-pants of the courses for cavers and examples of provisions for cavers to take for an expedition should be presented.
