Abstract

Background: During the second half of pregnancy, there is an increase in the fetal thyroid hormone production which further contributes to increased maternal iodine requirements because iodide readily crosses the placenta. Renal excretion is the primary route of iodine excretion. It accounts for more than ninety percent of ingested iodine.
