Assessment of Serum 25 (OH) Vitamin D Status in Elite Portuguese Cycling Athletes
Journal Title: Journal of Science and Cycling - Year 2015, Vol 4, Issue 2
Abstract
It is recognized that vitamin D has multiple effects in health (Autier, Boniol et al. 2014) and in athletic performance (Ogan and Pritchett 2013). It has been shown that it may have a role in the immune function, protein synthesis, inflammatory responses, regulation of cell growth and skeletal muscle physiology. However, vitamin D deficiency is common either in general population (Holick and Chen 2008) as in athletes (Farrokhyar, Tabasinejad et al. 2014). The endogenous synthesis via ultraviolet-B radiation through exposure to sunlight is the major source of vitamin D in humans. The 25(OH) Vitamin D is used as the clinical measure of vitamin D status (Willis, Peterson et al. 2008). However optimal concentration thresholds are not yet well determined.

The effect of power alternation frequency during cycling on metabolic load and subsequent running performance
The purpose of this study was to determine whether the frequency of power output alternation during cycling affects subsequent running performance. Eleven male triathletes completed a graded cycle test to determine peak...
Reliability and validity of PowerCal power distribution during cycling time trial
The PowerCal device (Cyclops, Madison, USA) is a heart rate (HR) strap that estimates power output (PO) using an algorithm computed from the HR response recorded during exercise. The device is a low-cost method (~ 99 US...
Treadmill-based cycling time trial better predicts seasonal cross-country mountain bike performance than traditional parameters in laboratory tests
Specific cross-country mountain bike (MTB) laboratory tests are used to monitor training and performance of elite athletes. To better follow up long-term performance development we designed a new MTB specific treadmill-b...
The effect of time-trial duration on aerodynamic drag
Aerodynamic drag is the main resistance (80-90 %) among the total resistive forces (RT, N) opposing motion on level ground in cycling (Debraux et al. 2011). To reduce air resistance, cyclists adopt a characteristic time...
The effect of exercise mode on salivary IgA secretion in high level triathletes
Background: It is widely accepted that exercise of either long duration or high intensity can have suppressive effects on the immune system. However, it remains to be identified if exercise mode plays a part in the deter...
