ASSESSMENT OF THE ROMANIAN MEDICINAL PLANT RESEARCH – FROM EUROPEAN TO NATIONAL LEVEL

Abstract

Romania has a tradition in the use and exploiting the benefits of aromatic and medicinal plants in almost all its regions. The wide variety of flora in the country and the existence of the Danube Delta with its unique vegetation and different plant species are offering the perfect framework for developing research and investigating the potential of aromatic and medicinal plants and their therapeutic use. No effort has been made to evaluate the research developed in Romania in the last two decades. Hence, the present paper focuses on a scientometric analysis performed on data collected from Scopus, during 2000-2015. The data contains information on number of papers, citations, affiliation and number of authors. The paper also identifies the scientific domains connected with this type of research and points out the institutions with competencies and published results in the analyzed time frame. The analysis identified some weaknesses in the national research in this area and some recommendations were suggested - the diversification of the publication avenues, increasing the number of journals targeted and directing publications to other international journals, hence increasing the number of citations and the quantitative aspect of the published research.
