Barriers for breast cancer screening in Poland

Abstract
Breast cancer is the most common malignancy among women in Poland. In the twenty-first century success of treatment of the cancer is still determined by an early detection. It is worth asking why women in Poland do not participate in the screening examinations that are free of charge and can save their life? When looking for the causes of unsatisfactory participation levels observed for screening mammography it was decided to conduct our own research focusing them on the women point of view. The purpose of the study was to investigate the opinions of the women on what discourages them, and what encourages them for screening examinations. The study showed that participation in screening increases with education and accessibility to examinations. The most often mentioned by respondents barriers proved to be: lack of symptoms in the breast in the absence of knowledge regarding the need for such research, lack of stationary mammography facility and lack of time.
