BETWEEN RESOURCEFULNESS AND HELPLESSNESS OF ADOLESCENTS FROM FAMILIES WITH DIVERSE STRUCTURES

Journal Title: Educational Psychology - Year 2013, Vol 46, Issue 4

Abstract

Abstract: According to many family specialists, the social functioning of an individual depends largely on the adopted behavior patterns and experiences originating from the generational family. Being aware of how different and unique the process of upbringing is in families with diverse structures, the author attempted to answer the question whether adolescents from two-parent families, single-parent families and blended families differ in terms of resourcefulness and personality traits. Since personality predictors of resourcefulness were defined, it was possible to obtain a fuller picture of the issue being analyzed. The study included 314 participants in late adolescence (mean age – 21) from Łódzkie Province. The following research methods were used: a questionnaire, the NEO-Five Factor Inventory (NEO-FFI) adapted by B. Zawadzki, J. Strelau, P. Szczepaniak and M. Śliwińska, and the Interpersonal Relations Scale (SUI) by J. M. Stanik. The results showed differences in the area of the psychological variables under discussion between the groups of women and men from families with diverse structures. Helplessness and a pessimistic attitude toward oneself and one's environment most frequently marked adolescents from single-parent families. There were no differences between the groups of adolescents being compared in terms of behaviors described as resourceful, enterprising behaviors. Openness to experience was the personality dimension that differentiated the groups of adolescents in the study, and it is most marked in women and men from two-parent families.
