Body image psychotherapy in anorexia and bulimia nervosa– an integrative approach: application of psychodynamic psychotherapy and psychodramatic techniques

Abstract
Objectives The article presents proposal of of implementing an integrative approach to body image therapy for patients with anorexia and bulimia nervosa. The integrative approach proposes to consider techniques of the psychodynamic therapeutic paradigm as well as psychodrama and/of cognitive-behavioural techniques. The sample consisted of 121 females with eating disorders ( bulimia nervosa, anorexia nervosa, binge eating disorder). Methods Psychometric and clinical methods: the Contour Drawing Rating Scale by K.Thompson and the Gray Eating Disorder Inventory by D. Garner (by C. Żechowski ) the Sociocultural Attitudes Towards Appearance Scale – 3, SATAQ-3 by K.Thompson Results The study identified 4 psychological types of females with eating disorders (i.e., neurotic, youth/narcissistic, impulsive and perfectionist). Common elements as well as differences were found in the body image psychotherapy of females in the sample. Conclusions The work also includes considerations for providing therapy to the mentioned four types of females who suffer from eating disorders.
