Bombing and more bombing: urban aesthetics and audiovisual discursivity through graffiti practices south of Quito

Abstract

The article aims to show how the graffiti practice has been developing south of Quito. Attention is focused on public space as a dynamic and conflictive process where graffiti practice generates a particular urban aesthetic that demonstrates both processes linked to spatial segregation and elitised conceptions of that aesthetic. I worked from television news about graffiti issued in the last four years, laws concerning the use of public space in the city of Quito, graffiti audiovisual materials, ethnographic interviews and participant observation. The immersion in the field was done especially in the Solanda neighborhood, a highly representative place for the south of the city and one of the main scenarios for Quito graffiti.
