BULGARIANS – GRADUATES OF RICHELIEU LYCEUM

Abstract

Among the educational institutions in Odessa in the first half of the nineteenth century, the Richelieu Lyceum deserves special attention. It was founded on 2 May, 1817 by the decree of Emperor Alexander I. From 1817 to 1820 the abbe Charles Nicole was the first director of the Lyceum. Faculty of physics, mathematics and law were established in 1837. Later, the College of Oriental Languages was added to the Lyceum, and a commercial branch was soon opened. In 1841 was created a cameral department, which trained public servants and lawyers in the field of public and private law. During 20-50s of the XXth century, were educated the future prominent figures of Bulgarian enlightenment – scholars, historians, philologists: Nikolai Palauzov, Spiridon Palauzov, Ivan Bogorov, Nayden Gerov, Dobri Chintulov, and Botjo Petkov – father of Hristo Botev. The graduates of the Richelieu Lyceum became subsequently well-known public figures, educators, enlighteners. Thus, the graduate of the law faculty Hristo Mutev became the secretary of the mayor of Odessa. Another student of the Richelieu lyceum Ivan Shopov became the first Bulgarian bibliographer, Konstantin Petkovich became a Russian consul in Bulgaria. Nikolai Palauzov not only received the title of nobleman in Odessa, but also was the mayor of Odessa. Among other famous graduates of the Lyceum were: Nayden Gerov – the author of a six-volume dictionary of the Bulgarian language, Dimitr Mutev – a doctor of philosophy at the University of Berlin, Nicola Mutev – a famous Bulgarian composer and many others.
