BUSINESS MENTORS’ COMPETENCES IN INTENSIVE LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS: LESSONS FROM AN EMPIRICAL RESEARCH
Journal Title: MANAGERIAL CHALLENGES OF THE CONTEMPORARY SOCIETY - Year 2017, Vol 1, Issue 10
Abstract
Small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) play a significant role in the European economy. The sector’s contribution to employment and economic progress and to preserving wealth is incontestable. It is obvious the services supporting the effective operation of SMEs are of particular importance, and business mentoring - a recently developed form of business support services - could play a decisive role among such services. In our understanding the business mentor is an experienced person who supports the mentee in increasing the value of his/her company’s activities by highlighting possible new combination of the mentees’ and the companies’ own resources. The aim of our study is to improve the understanding of the institutional settings under which mentoring services are provided to the companies in Hungary, Romania, Finland and France, and of the competencies business mentors need to be professionally effective. The interpretation of the mentors’ skills and competences are somewhat different in the participating countries, accordingly. These skills and competences can be acquired and developed during working life experiences and in various business situations.
