CAMELS IN THE OTTOMAN ARMY AND REGULATIONS RELATED TO THE OTTOMAN CAMEL CORPS DURING WORLD WAR I
Journal Title: The Journal of International Social Research - Year 2016, Vol 9, Issue 47
Abstract
Owing to their resistance to hot and dry climates and their capability of bearing heavy weight loads on sand, camels have been widely used by many civilisations throughout the course of history. In the Ottoman State, camels were not only used as draught and draft animals and mounts by the army and common people, but were also used for pulling military loads particularly in the Campaign of Suez Canal was performed during World War I. On the other hand, Ottoman regulations related to the use and care of camels were very few in number. The “Camel Manual” and the “Instruction Related to the Carrier Camel Corps” published by the Fourth Army in 1915 and 1916, respectively, laid down the rules of procedures of the Ottoman camel corps. Apart from general information on camels and their military use, these regulations also contained technical information on the care, health and diseases of camels, which was of particular significance for veterinary medicinal practice.
