CANON AND FANFICTION THROUGH THE PRISM OF COGNITIVE-AND-SYNTACTIC APPROACH

Abstract
The present investigation is dedicated to the problem of fanfi ction as a genre of digital literature and its basic characteristics. The objective of the paper is to single out similarities and diff erences in the lingual representation of the main characters’ speech portraits in fanfi cs and canon-texts. As a side task of the investigation we mean to determine the degree of fi cwriter’s freedom in portraying such characters. Employing the cutting-edge methods of cognitive linguistics, narratology and text analysis and grounding on traditional syntactic theories, the author argues that besides being interactive, hypermediatic, multimodal, processual and interwoven with other texts of the same type, digital literature boasts such characteristics as ludative nature and imitativity. The results of the investigation prove all of them to be intrinsic to fanfi ction where they fi nd refl ection on the level of author-reader integrative collaboration as well as in the plot and language of the work of fi ction. The most democratic genre of fi ction, fanfi ction is still restricted by the canon-text in terms of both creative images and characters’ speech portraits, the deepest level of syntax inclusive.
