Carbofuran Residue Analysis in Ground Water of Intensely Banana Planted Region ‘Mananthavady’ of Wayanad District, Kerala

Abstract

Wayanad, the agrobased district of Kerala is noted for its natural beauty, pleasant climate and the fertile soil. As the farmers of the land primarily depend on agriculture for their living, there is a necessity for the proper control of pests to make the cultivation economically a success. The unscientific and indiscriminate use of pesticides by the farmers in the region caused severe environmental pollution. This effect became severe with the introduction of pesticides like carbofuran with high solubility in water. Its leaching in to other water bodies resulted in the degradation in the quality of the soil, pollution of drinking water, endangering of animals, birds and even deterioration of public health. The present work deals with the detection and estimation of carbofuran pesticide residues in ground water samples collected from intensely banana planted regions namely Varayal, Vengoor and Alattil of ‘Mananthavady’ taluk in Wayanad district of Kerala. The study reveals the direct relation between the acidity of the soil and the leaching of carbofuran from the soil in to ground water. High performance liquid chromatography is found to be precise and effective to analyze the leaching of carbofuran from the soil in to ground water qualitatively and quantitatively.
