Journal Title: Medycyna Ogólna i Nauki o Zdrowiu - Year 2010, Vol 16, Issue 1

Abstract

Health inequalities related to socio-economic variables may include place of residence. Based on deaths records (delivered by the Central Statistical Office) main causes of death were identified, differences in mortality between rural and urban children and adolescents (aged 1-19) were investigated, and changes in mortality by causes were assessed over the period 1999 and 2006. Considering the cases of transport accidents, drowning, and congenital defects the death risk was significantly higher among rural than urban children and adolescents. During the period under consideration, among rural children, a significant decrease was observed in mortality rates due to transport accidents, congenital defects and unknown causes of death. An increase in mortality due to suicides was noted among rural adolescent boys.
