Clinical profile of amoebic liver abscess cases: A descriptive study from Pondicherry

Abstract

Background: Abscess of the liver has been recognized since the time of Hippocrates. Even today, it remains a surgical problem with considerable morbidity and mortality. Advances in diagnostic and interventional radiology over the last three decades have facilitated a minimally invasive approach to management of this condition. Objective: To study the clinical profile of patients diagnosed of amoebic liver abscess attending surgical OPD of Aarupadai Veedu Medical College and Hospital, Pondicherry. Methodology: The present descriptive observational study was carried out at surgical department of Aarupadai Veedu Medical College and Hospital, Pondicherry during year 2007-10. All 86 patients diagnosed as having amoebic liver abscess were included in our study as study subjects. The patients then subjected for detailed clinical examination followed by USG abdomen and other blood investigation including LFTs. Results: Majority were from 31-40 years age group (44.2%). Males (93%) and females were 7%. About 90% of male patients were alcohol abusers and smokers. Most of them were consuming spurious alcohol. Commonly observed symptoms were pain in 83(96.5%), fever in 67(77.9%), anorexia in 30(34.9%) patients. 97% of patients had intercostals tenderness. Tender lymphadenopathy was observed in 76%, anemia in 52% and pleural effusion in 6% patients. Conclusion: Commonest age incidence was 31-50 with male preponderance. Commonly observed symptom was pain and fever. Commonest presentation was intercostals tenderness and tender lymphadenopathy.
