Clinicopathological Evaluation of Gall Bladder Malignancy at a Single Tertiary Care Institution In Northern India –A Retrospective Study

Abstract

Introduction: Gall bladder malignancy is the most common malignancy among the tumours of the biliary tree. It is the fifth most common cancer of gastrointestinal tract. Material and methods: Our study spans over a period of 8 years (2007-2014) during which 33 patients of gall bladder malignancy were operated in our hospital and specimen were received in the Department of Pathology. These records were retrospectively reviewed. Results: The peak incidence of gall bladder malignancy was in the age group of 41-50 years. Female patients predominated males with male: female ratio of 1: 3.42. Gall stones were present in75.75% patients of Gall bladder malignancy. Pain abdomen was the most common clinical feature. Adenocarcinoma was the most common histopathological subtype. Most of cases had advanced pathological stage. Conclusion: Gall bladder malignancy is an uncommon cancer. It is a poor prognostic cancer with adenocarcinoma being the most common histopathological subtype.
