Journal Title: Eurasian Journal of Family Medicine - Year 2016, Vol 5, Issue 2

Abstract

Aim: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder diagnosis of offsprings deteriorates family functioning, causes emotional problems and heavy parental burden. In our study, we investigated the probable link between the attention deficit hyperactivity disorder diagnosis and parent’s anxiety. Methods: Parents of children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder diagnosis (n=39) submitted informed consent upon their clinic visit and filled in questionnaire. Parent’s age, educational status, anxiety level through Beck Anxiety Inventory, child’s age and gender, and follow up period after initial attention deficit hyperactivity disorder diagnosis are inquired. Data is processed with appropriate statistical programme. Results: Average follow up period after initial attention deficit hyperactivity disorder diagnosis was 17,4±21,8 months. Average Beck Anxiety Score for parents was 7,56±4,7. Comparison of follow up period after diagnosis with parents’ anxiety yielded statistical significant result and showed that as duration prolongs so does parents’ anxiety. Conclusion: Consultation for better problem solving skills and psychosocial support should be offered to parents of children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder diagnosis. Evaluation of causes and outcomes of parent anxiety will ensure health care providers to embrace an holistic approach. Parents with similar concerns can constitute support groups, and thus thward social isolation and stigmatisation. They can be directed to stress reduction activities. Taking into consideration of the link between attention deficit hyperactivity disorder diagnosis and parent anxiety, primary care physicians should build awareness on preventive measures.
